Fueled by the vision of Frances Hooks and local businessman Jed Dreifus, one student from Carver High School was sent to a preparatory school summer program in 1969 to experience learning outside Memphis. The goal was to empower students to grow intellectually, socially and emotionally by broadening their knowledge beyond the streets of inner-city Memphis. The idea grew and today REACH Memphis serves over 340 high-achieving high school students from Shelby County Schools. Each student is matched with a mentor who helps prepare the student for his/her summer experience and then for college.
Our 152 mentors represent various industries throughout Shelby County including banking, shipping, government, engineering, and business entities. More than half of our mentors are alums of the program. They spend at least four hours per month with their students. As a community-based program, our mentors are able to work with our students in any public venue.
Since program inception, we have provided guidance for over 1,700 students, all of which have articulated the same words: “This program changed my life!”
Please contact our office if you are interested in becoming a REACH Memphis mentor. We're located at 4646 Poplar Avenue (corner of Poplar and Perkins), Suite 327. You can call us at 901.682.0699. Hope to hear from you soon!
