The Heart & Hand Center runs after-school programming for at-risk, 3rd-12th grade, youth in the Northeast Denver Five Point community. Without the Heart & Hand Center, many of these children would not have access to a safe, productive and supervised environment to go to after school. Statistics show that the peak hours for drug and alcohol use, gang participation, smoking, and sexual activity are between the hours of 3:00 and 6:00 p.m. due to a lack of supervision.  The Heart & Hand Center addresses these issues of supervision as well as provides enriching and educational activities that foster youth development, and offers these kids a safe haven after school.
Our Welton Street Site provides programming for 30 6th-12th Graders, each evening. Programming at this site is offered free of charge to participants.
Our 3rd-5th Grade program is run out of Columbine Elementary School. This program engages 55 youth each evening and requires a minimal fee of $5 per child/month.

The daily schedule for at the Center is broken into 3 sections.  Upon arrival, the children are fed a hot meal provided by the Foodbank of the Rockies. Following this meal, the children spend an hour engaged in academically focused activities, as well as participating in a one-hour workshop.

Academic Activities:
The Heart & Hand Center focuses on academics by working in conjunction with the participant’s classroom schoolteachers.  By working with the teachers, we are able to provide homework assistance specifically designed for our students, enhance the skills the kids are working on in their classrooms, and assist with their homework each evening.  In addition to homework assistance, we provide tutoring, mentoring and one-on-one academic support.

Workshops:
Workshops vary by evening, but include activities such as: yoga, cooking, theater, writers’ workshop, chess, art, science, etc.  If you have a hobby or skill you are passionate about, share it with our youth by hosting a workshop.
