It was a very humbling and rewarding day to be able to help a couple who have been homeless for over a year. One of the most challenging parts of the day was to encourage them to seek services. They were overwhelmed by what was available but also believed they could take care of their needs elsewhere or on another day. They had no identification, had not applied for food stamps and had not filed for disability (despite legal blindness). Instead of getting these gaps resolved today, they chose to defer to anther day. I don't believe it was because they didn't want assistance but because the convention hall was so overwhelming in its size and the number of people. I was able to encourage both to get haircuts and get veterinary care for their dog- two services that were much appreciated. I was disappointed that there were no coats, sensible shoes, heavy blankets, sleeping bags or undergarments. While a clothing bank and coat bank was available, it did not meet this couple's immediate needs. It would be very helpful if future events included these much needed items.

This was the third time that I have volunteered for the Homeless Project. This time I helped put together the hygiene bags - the person that was our lead was very organized and efficient.

Helped setting up tables and chairs mostly. Each section of the room was well labelled and people knew the general area they needed to be setting up in. The only issue came with the actual arrangement of tables which people were mostly lost on. Overall things went smoothly. :)

The leaders were well prepared and there were extra copies of the event floor plan which made setup go smooth and steady with minimal issue resolution required.

Next year, please remind those working set up or tear down to wear gloves as protection.
