|Shift Name||Growing Gardens and the YMCA of Northern Colorado|
The 1-acre Food Project Farm in Longmont is the result of a partnership between Growing Gardens and the YMCA of Northern Colorado, and was established to provide produce donations and gardening and nutrition-based education to the surrounding neighborhood.
100% of the produce grown on this farm is donated to those in need, which is especially important because the surrounding neighborhood is classified as a Food Desert, an area where food is non-existent, unhealthy or too expensive. We also donate seeds and plant starts, and provide free educational and service learning opportunities to youth in the community. Some of our community partners include the OUR Center, WIC Longmont, Smiling Faces Academy, Timberline Elementary School, and the Rocky Mountain and Aspen I Have a Dream classes.
We would be tackling an array of tasks, including, but not limited to: weeding, general site maintenance, and harvesting.
The Food Project Farm feeds our community, over 10,000 lbs of produce was given to families in need last year! Please wear closed toe shoes and bring hats, gloves, sunscreen, reusable water bottles and a snack as well as knee cushions and other gardening items you might find helpful. We have some of many items, but more tools make faster progress.
