During the Girls Like Me service project, I helped lead two interactive STEM sessions—“If I Invented Something…” and “Inflating a Balloon with a Chemical Reaction.” Both activities encouraged creativity, curiosity, and confidence among young minority girls while introducing them to real-world science concepts.
In the first session, students used their imagination to design inventions that could make life easier or more fun. This helped them think like engineers and understand how creativity leads to innovation. The second session involved a hands-on chemical reaction with baking soda and vinegar that inflated a balloon, showing how acids and bases react to form gas.
Each activity made science fun and approachable, while also showing the importance of women in STEM. As a pre-med biology student and future orthodontist, it was inspiring to mentor and motivate younger girls who could one day become scientists and inventors themselves. The experience strengthened my passion for outreach, representation, and making science engaging for the next generation.
