About

For those of you familiar with Harpers Branch Creek Greenbelt, welcome back! In this event we will do a planting of plants in the upper reach of the creek off Kenwood.

Harpers Branch Creek Greenbelt is in a usually dry creek - there are no paths and this is rugged and uneven terrain. Only sign up for this event if you are steady on your feet and able to climb over and under obstacles:

  • Wear boots or sturdy shoes: Supportive footwear is needed because the terrain is rough, and they can get dirty or wet.
  • Mosquito Repellant: Especially if you attract mosquitoes, apply some before you show up!
  • Long sleeve shirt and pants: There is some poison ivy in this area, and any brushy plants and branches can scratch you if you are not careful.

For those of you who have not heard of us - join us and discover a hidden, unmarked, and almost secret greenbelt most people have neither seen nor heard of: Harpers Branch Creek Greenbelt in Travis Heights.  Nestled in a dry branch of Harpers Branch Creek and descending well below street level, hiking down this dry creek channel allows you to quickly disappear into a pocket wilderness in the middle of a city neighborhood.  We have recently adopted the creek in this greenbelt and plan to do more stewardship and work to restore this creek (https://harpersbranch.org)

Trash bags, gloves, and water are provided, but feel free to bring your own gloves and materials if you would like and wear work-appropriate clothing. We will be ambling over and under fallen trees which may block the creek and will be walking on uneven terrain. We'll meet on the street on Kenwood.  See agenda below.

If you have an interest in biodiversity or native and invasive plants, you will notice examples of all this in the creek, and may be interested in this iNaturalist project dedicated to the area: Harpers Branch Creek Greenbelt Native Plant Biodiversity
