About
The NC Commission on Volunteerism & Community Service and The Multi-Agency Warehouse (MAW) in Statesville, NC, supports disaster relief efforts in Western North Carolina related to Hurricane Helene. The MAW is dedicated to receiving, organizing, and storing in-kind donations, in addition to distributing these items to Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster (VOADs) and eligible community partners supporting families and individuals impacted by Helene.
The Carolina Center for Public Service (CCPS) collaborated with Volunteer NC and MAW to organize a one-day volunteer trip on Friday, April 11, 2025. Volunteers will be responsible for a variety of tasks crucial to disaster recovery efforts, that may include:
- Helping unload box trucks of donated goods
- Sorting and organizing inventory to place in bins
- Restocking shelves
- Packaging donated goods into boxes to send to community partners
- Loading box trucks for donation distribution
- Providing cleanup services to support facility
CCPS will transport volunteers to Statesville from campus at 10am, where they will have a brief lunch before beginning the afternoon shift (1-5PM). Volunteers will be provided with work gloves for handling items safely. Additionally, volunteers should ensure they dress in clothes suitable for active work, including closed-toe shoes for safety. Layers of clothing are encouraged since temperatures can vary in the warehouse. Volunteers will then be transported back to Chapel Hill by about 7pm. Snacks will be provided on the return trip but not dinner.
Volunteers may drive themselves to the Statesville warehouse and will be able to note that option when registering. Those wishing to eat lunch with the group would need to be there by 12pm, if you would not like lunch, you must be there promptly at 1pm. All volunteers will need to stay for the whole shift until 5pm.
