Join Art From the Streets (AFTS) as we bring creativity, connection, and dignity directly to individuals experiencing homelessness at Austin’s shelters and navigation centers. Our outreach sessions offer a welcoming, judgment-free space where participants can create art, relieve stress, and explore creative expression. Volunteers must be 18 years or older, and no artistic experience is required.

What You’ll Do

Help AFTS staff set up fun, mobile art stations at partner shelters and navigation centers

Welcome participants, pass out supplies, and cheer on their creativity in a kind and supportive way

Build positive connections with artists who may be joining us for the first time

Lend a hand with clean-up and organizing at the end of each session

Be a warm, encouraging presence and help remind everyone that creativity is for everyone

Weekly Schedule and Locations
Marshalling Yard (Mondays 1-3 pm)
1400 Airport Commerce Dr, Austin, TX 78741
The Marshalling Yard Emergency Shelter is a temporary shelter with capacity to serve up to 300 clients. The facility is owned by the City of Austin and operated by Family Endeavors. Marshalling Yard Emergency Shelter is not a walk-up shelter. AFTS volunteers support outreach art sessions by helping create a welcoming, calm environment where participants can engage creatively, build community, and take a break from the stresses of daily survival.
Austin Resource Center for the Homeless (ARCH)(Tuesdays 1-3 pm)
500 E 7th St, Austin, TX 78701
ACRH is an emergency shelter for men. The facility is owned by the City of Austin and operated by Family Endeavors. AFTS volunteers support safe, trauma-informed art activities that encourage creativity, empowerment, and community building.
Charlie Center (Wednesdays 1-3 pm)
12675 Research Blvd, Austin, TX 78759
The Charlie Center is a non-profit community center serving individuals experiencing homelessness in North Austin. They provide hospitality, healthcare, and navigation services to help individuals take their next step toward permanent housing. AFTS volunteers help facilitate art sessions that promote self-expression, stress relief, and positive social connection in a structured, supportive setting.
8th Street Shelter - Women and Transgender Shelter (Thursdays 1-3 pm)
The Eighth St. Shelter is an emergency shelter for women and transgender clients. The facility is owned by the City of Austin and operated by Family Endeavors. AFTS volunteers support safe, trauma-informed art activities that encourage creativity, empowerment, and community building in a women-centered space.
Sunrise Navigation Center (Fridays 1-3 pm)

Sunrise Navigation Center offers pathways to housing for people experiencing homelessness through low-barrier access to wraparound services. AFTS volunteers assist with art outreach sessions that foster relaxation, creative expression, and meaningful human connection.
To ensure a safe and respectful environment for everyone, volunteers are expected to follow these guidelines:
