    Cat Enrichment

Hi, Everybody, Sorry to say I volunteered not feeling well and left early at noon even though I booked until 1 pm.
I was getting the flu and hope it didn't affect the cats in any way. Played with so many kitties before I left, they are so precious and I love them all coming back now that I feel better! So many kitties so kittle time!

    Hi, Everybody!
Always great to read Johnny Leblancs notes on kitties getting adopted! All the kittens in the kitchen were adopted and some adults too, Yeah! I helped Jean work the cages and community rooms yesterday. For the first time I did the wet food and boy do the kitties love that stuff! Socializing kitties comes next. I introduced myself to new kitties such as Helen, a calico in H23, shy but sweet, Sasha a beautiful Blue Tabby in H21, just ready to be petted, lots of No Names in H10 a calico, H11 a Tortie, H12 an older kitty, all very social and seemingly gentle. Don't forget Cassins, a black kitty and Layla a calico glued at the hip, they are always together and they both have paws with 6 toes! Their paws look like baseball mitts! Finally there's Juniper in H 27 a black and white with beautiful golden brown eyes who wants out of her cage and eagerly greets you! Don't forget Rebecca in H25 gentle and sweet. So many kitties so little time!

    Hi, Everybody,
Wow! Did section H need help! Lisa one of the staff workers was by herself cleaning cages and boy were they a mess! Dirty litter boxes and water and crunchy bowls needing attention. I ran around cleaning the community rooms as best as I was able which helped Lisa out. Lisa's a pro at cleaning, gets the cats out of the cages into a wire carrying case then scrubs the cages, shakes out the bedding, gets the wet food going along with fresh litter, water and crunchies. I helped her cleaning the cages when I had time but she's the ace!
Socializing kitties comes next! I love little Ursula in H3! I read she was adopted, Yeah! She's this tiny thing with no tail that jumps in your lap purring! Then there's Susie in H38, so shy but really wanting to be petted. Thor in H36 escaped but he's gentle with this huge head and black fur. All kinds of kitties, Cream in H40, wearing a collar, Aki in H39, with loads of energy and lots of No Names, wanting love. Then there's that huge white kitty in one of the community rooms. I don't know his name but he's very affectionate and I call him Mr. Big Stuff! Enough for now!

    Hi, Everybody!
Another morning shift in H room, cleaning litter, filling bowls with crunchies and water in the community cat rooms. Got to know this very nice staff worker who was born, February 14th on Valentines Day! We worked our butts off cleaning. It was just me and him. When the black garbage bag in the garbage can got full I couldn't lift it out so he came and did it for me! We were a great team!
Now the good part! I played with Gizmo again and she really likes me, all curled up in my lap, marking me, purring, chirping and just chilling out! She has a nickname. I call her Gizzy now. Oh what to do? Should I take her home? I'm gone all day with work and I don't want her to get lonely. What to do?
Anyway I introduced myself and socialized with new kitties. Duckie in H31, cute and playful. Louis in H 33, serene and just mellow jello. "The Mighty Kittens" in H37 jumping on top of each other, fighting, crying and throwing crunchies and cat litter all over the floor! Ransom in H29 ready to go home with anybody. And last but not least Mr. Cuddles hanging out in Zen mode but very willing to be petted ASAP! Well that's it for now! Signing off on another cat adventure at Austin Animal Shelter!

    Hi, Everybody!
Another day at the shelter! I got here at 8 a.m. because my night shift at work was done early so I decided to just head over to the shelter an hour before my scheduled volunteer time. Wow! As usual lots to do! Angel, a staff worker was really busy cleaning out cat cages as fast as possible! So I ran around and cleaned the community cat rooms, litter boxes, water and crunchy bowls. Poor Gizmo, in H44 was sick with diareahha or vomit and looking like "Get me outta here, it's dirty and smells bad as he looked me in the eyes"! So I picked him up and brought him to a cat room and then cleaned his cage. I filled out a pink slip and stuck it outside the med clinic door. " Good luck" Gizmo! I hope the Docs help! We played and he crawled in my lap and raised his little head upward and looked deeply in my eyes again making these chirping sounds! Gizmo you're breaking my heart!
Charlene in H23, sweet and gentle with orange and white fur. Momma in H24 frisky and always throwing her toy outside her cage in grey and white fur. Then there's No Name in H10 and another one in H12 beautiful calicos ready to love anybody who comes along. Don't forget Crunchy in H20 just ready to go home with the next visitor. So many cats, so little time! I forgot Ursula in H14, I put her on kitchen time. She jumps up and down in her cage and she ran around in the kitchen checking everything out. So much energy from this tiny creature! Time to stop writing I guess, I could go on and on I'm a writer and a poet so I have the gift of the gab! Just a reminder to myself, I think Oscar in H? is also a big candidate for kitchen time. He jumped off his ledge in his cage into the crunchy bowl which flew into the cat litter box! Never a dull moment in Cat Enhancement!

    Hi, Everyone,
It's always a different experience every time I come to volunteer. Today was no exception.
I dived into uncharted seas and stormy weather and allowed a wild, high energy kitten or maybe young adult have kitchen time. We played with a feather toy for half an hour as this little feline, jumped in the air, darted around and swatted at absolutely everything! She made my day and I couldn't help but smile. But then there was the Cat Apocalypse in the hoarder community cat room. Fabrizio, bullied me with swatting and a mean look. Another cat got between my feet where I stumbled and dropped a huge litter box! Thank God it was fresh litter! Then one of the escape artists got out, a small black cat! Oh, well, I learned I have to have my wits together to visit that room! And finally Gretchen jumped out of her cage so I grabbed her and put her in one of the cat rooms. Thinking everything was cool I focused on No Name in H12 who seems kinda sad. All of a sudden Gretchen had jumped to the top of the cat room trying to get out! One of the City Worker Guys stood on a chair and swooped her into his arms and we put her back in her cage ASAP!
Well just another day in Cat Enhancement, and I love every minute of it. What a bunch of great cats including a beautiful Calico named Shelly. She is gentle, affectionate and playful!
    Signing off, Lynn

    Hi, Everyone,
Was a little tired today so I hung out socializing cats in the community group rooms. There were plenty of other volunteers talking with customers and taking care of kitties. So I played with the hoarder cats of which there are 9 in the first community room to the left when you walk in the door to section H. I was very happy to see they all look better and playful and there is one cat with the biggest eyes I've ever seen, has gained weight from being really skinny! This cat truly has huge eyes! So happy to know Renny got adopted along with other cats. I was also glad that a really nice lady stopped by looking for an older cat than a kitten. All seems well in the cat section!

Hi, Everyone, Was great to be back after a couple of weeks away. Through myself into F section, so much to be done! Cleaned out very cage in F section. All litter boxes were cleaned along with new bedding installed and more cat food, "Crunchies", for all kitties! Don't forget the water bowls! I fell in love with all the wonderful kitties there, like Mr. Binx!
When I cleaned out the cage with 3 wild kittens it took me and the help of another to capture them and put them back in their cage. We'd get 2 kittens in the cage but they would jump out when we tried to put the 3rd kitten back in. This scenario went on for quite sometime chasing kitties around F section! The day flew by and there were 3 adoptions! Tulip, a small grey and white kitten and I think as I left a very nice family was going to adopt Mary! All these guys were presiding in H section. So I left my shift very happy to see wonderful kitties starting new lives with their new families. I'll see ya tomorrow as I'm volunteering on Saturday but only for an hour and a half!
