    Longhorn LULAC Council 4799

I volunteer to help clean up the lawn in Casa Marialena and it was a great and humble experince. Not only did I had the opportunity to get to know more of my fellow LULAC classmate but I knew more about the program Casa Marielena. Casa Marialane is a house in where immigrants can go once they reach the US but does not have a place to go. I met a lot of refugees from Africa and it was a real eye opening experience because typically, you hear a lot of the stories of the refugees from Latin America but not from other countries of the world.

On this shift, I was able to tell fellow classmates and employees to where specifically the trash needed to be organized. On the last shift, I walked around with the posters and was not stationed in the recyclable bins but during this shift, I had more interactions with people. More people got aware of where to categorize the trash and where to place the compost material. A teacher from one of the schools were so impressed that she even asked the proctor of the event more information on how to start this in her campus.

This was my first time coming to Pease Park and it was a great experience in that we did so much in just three hours. I am not that knowledgeable about geology or the environment and the people I volunteered with would speak about it a lot. We added mulch to all of the trails in the park as well we would watch out for trash in the grass. It was annual and I do plan to participate next year for sure.

It was great to go to the Concho Garden again with my mentoring group since it was a way to get their hours done as well that it was a way to get to know more each other. We did weeding around plots of lands that were already planted. While doing this, I took this time to actually interact with my men-tee and get to know her more.

It was great to return back to the Concho Community Garden. We did a lot today in that we took out the weed of the plot of land we were going to plant. We then planted various plants like mint, aloe, mustard, and others in the plot. Even though a lot of people go to help, there are always things to do at the garden which makes me feel helpful and I like that you do not need gardening experience to volunteer.

I really like working with this Dropout Prevention Program due to the fact that I am working and developing teaching and mentoring skills. I am going to continue going there due to the fact that I have to complete hours for ALD but even after I am done with my hours, I will continue to go. For now, I was helping parents fill out the forms that they need to complete for the application process.
