    Ismael @ UT Engineering EXPO

My service event was with UT’s engineering EXPO committee. Every year, the Cockrell School of Engineering holds two engineering expos. These events are meant to bring together UT engineers and the many companies eager to hire them. Fall EXPO is undoubtedly the biggest and most important career fair for engineers at UT. EXPO is where the majority of UT engineers will find employment and begin gaining the experience necessary to join the workforce.
My position as a volunteer at EXPO was as a corporate liaison. As a corporate liaison, I was tasked with tending to the representatives of many well-known companies. I would greet representatives upon their arrival, and direct them towards their booths where they prepared themselves before doors opened. I volunteered before doors to the event opened, and so there wasn’t much crowding. This allowed me to have a unique experience compared to volunteers who registered for later times. Volunteering at an earlier time allowed for a much calmer atmosphere when speaking to the company representatives. I was able to speak with them in a much more casual setting than usual. I learned a lot through my small talks with these representatives, and it really gave me a greater understanding of what they look to provide for engineering students like myself.
Volunteering with the EXPO committee was undoubtedly a valuable experience. I learned a great amount of information from the companies I spoke to, and was able to introduce myself to them. I loved volunteering with the EXPO committee because of what they do for engineers. It is thanks to this committee that many UT engineers are able to find the employment that will help them transition into their careers. I feel good knowing that through the time I’ve given, I was able to help fellow engineers in making those vital connections. This was only my first time volunteering at EXPO, but I will definitely be returning to do it again in the Spring and following years.
