This has ended. If you attended, let the organizer know by recording your Impact!

About

Commencement recognizes and celebrates students’ academic achievement while inspiring them to go forth and positively impact humanity. Join us in celebrating the graduating class of 2026 by volunteering to help students and their families navigate campus and create a positive and memorable experience. In-person commencement events will take place Friday, May 1st - Sunday, May 3rd. Volunteer roles are detailed below and volunteer shifts are listed in chronological order on the sign-up.

  • Accessibility Ambassadors: Accessibility Ambassadors will support our guests needing mobility assistance by providing transport via wheelchairs between drop-off locations to seating locations.

  • Commencement Procession Breakfast: Volunteers at this event will help set up, serve, and celebrate with seniors for the Senior Class Council Commencement Procession breakfast. After the graduating class begins processing this group of volunteers will also help with the take-down portion of the event.

  • Golf Cart Driver: As a golf cart volunteer, you will pick up and drive around families, students, and other commencement guests who seem lost on campus or who need assistance in moving from one location to another. A variety of shifts are available. CU Boulder Faculty, staff, and students must take or have taken CU’s Motorized Off-road Vehicles (Golf Cart Safety training) prior to the beginning of the volunteer shift. Golf cart driver volunteers that are not CU Boulder faculty, staff, and students must sign acknowledgment of having reviewed the University's Motorized Off-road Vehicles training course before the start of their shift. Copies of the training will be available for volunteers to review on-site prior to the shift. There will be a quick training before volunteers depart for the day that will further explain routes and pick-up/drop-off locations.

  • Recognition Ceremony Hosts: The role of the Recognition Ceremony Host is to serve as a representative of the Commencement Committee at various campus venues in support of the recognition ceremony planner(s).  Think of yourself as the event venue manager or host for your shift.  Select a volunteer shift based on the dates and times you are available and/or based on the college, school, department or program hosting the event. Volunteers will be sent information in advance regarding their role and should plan to attend a volunteer briefing meeting at the start of your shift.

Important Policy Information for Supervisors

Supervisors play an important role in helping teams take part, so we are encouraging supervisors to support staff by minimizing barriers to participation where possible. Please review the guidance below and connect with your supervisor and department HR liaisons if you plan to volunteer.

  • If an individual is REQUIRED to work as part of their campus role and position responsibilities, staff and supervisors should plan to support these events as part of their work week and should discuss with their supervisor how assisting in these events can be integrated into their regular hour work week. Therefore, the supervisor could consider reducing work hours during the week to account for the weekend hours that will be worked.

    • If regular work hours cannot be reduced in the same week as the event:

      • FLSA exempt employees: could be offered alternate administrative leave to use within the remainder of the fiscal year. Employees can code this as ADMN-Administrative Leave in MyLeave or their specific time-keeping system. (It should not be coded as “volunteer” administrative leave, as employees cannot “volunteer” for work that is part of their role/position duties. But it can be coded as regular recognition administrative leave.)

      • FLSA non-exempt employees: must be paid all applicable overtime/comp time and differential pay.

  • If an individual is NOT REQUIRED to work as part of their campus role and position responsibilities, and their role is not directly tied to sponsoring or facilitating these events, they are then considered to be volunteering in a voluntary and discretionary capacity, not considered work time. Volunteering in weekend campus events like commencement should be approved and discussed with their supervisor.

    • FLSA exempt employees: could be offered alternate Volunteer-Administrative leave to use within the remainder of the fiscal year. Employees can code it in MyLeave or their specific time-keeping system as Volunteer-Administrative Leave.

    • FLSA non-exempt employees: could be offered alternate Volunteer-Administrative leave to use within the remainder of the fiscal year. Employees can code it in MyLeave or their specific time-keeping system as Volunteer-Administrative Leave.  ** Overtime rules still apply if an employee reports working over 40 hours in the week of graduation.
