The energy was so great and the entire race was an inspiration to watch, from aid station organization to the amazing will and drive of the runners. Hope to be among the runners next year!
I loved everything about it. The atmosphere and the celebration of just doing something awesome. I have run Ultras before as it was really cool to be able to help runners in the way that I was helped.
Had a great time volunteering at Twin Lakes. No other AS Captain can do it better than the Mayor!
Please issue placards to authorized press vehicles and any others who are allowed special access to parking areas. When I tried to stop and question those at the Outward Bound aid station parking area regarding the issue of them ignoring directions, the "official videographers of the race" were belligerent and rude. They ignored instructions, drove dangerously fast through the area with little regard for vehicles and clearly very tired and not very attentive pedestrians. Their heightened sense of privilege was in stark contrast to the runners, crew members, race officials who were all uniformly gracious. Shame on them.
I was surprised by the relatively poor organization overall. For a professionally organized race series that has been run for many years a lot of the logistics suffered due to poor planning or bad judgement. For a race with such a high DNF rate, there should really be a transportation solution for runners that do not make cutoff at the most common spots. The aid stations seemed to be stoked with the bare minimum essentials for 100mi races. Obviously the Winfield situation was a mess, but that few number of busses seemed like an obvious case of poor judgement. Finally, one specific note about the bad placement of the toilets at Twin Lakes - Yikes! It made the whole aid station smelly and likely unsanitary.
All this said, working at the Twin Lakes aid station was a delight. Greg was an excellent captain!
