On Friday, November 7th, Connor, Lily, Maya, Madison, and I got to volunteer with the Pilgrims' Place Festival on behalf of English Club. After connecting with Janet, Connor and I got to work with Lyn at the "Swiggles" booth. The fun art activity let children create their own colorful cards using hot plates, crayons, and stencils. We were grateful to the Office of Community and Civic Engagement for sharing this opportunity with us.

On Friday, September 26th, I volunteered for the North American Sartre Society Conference on behalf of Dr. Dane Sawyer, working registration and helping with technical issues during sessions. It was interesting to listen to the presenters---specifically Desiree R. Melonas, Dana Francisco Miranda, Thomas Meagher, Joshua Harrington, Warren Scherb, and, of course, keynote speaker Lewis Gordon. While I didn't understand everything the presenters shared (I would have needed a handful more philosophy courses), there were pieces I recognized from Dr. Sawyer's classes and I especially enjoyed Warren's explanation of power, ontology and phenomenology. It was clear that everyone was passionate about the topics they'd come to discuss, and I'm glad to have been able to listen in.

Chris and I visited the garden to weed. We got to meet Susan, who owns the two wild plots and three shiba inus.

On Tuesday, Chris and I visited the garden to weed the plots. We got to see Marvhic and Kristina (who brought by two very cute dogs), and planted some new candy onions. The bok choy, broccoli and cauliflower we planted earlier are all doing well, and the snap peas are starting to come in.

Along with Machaela, Johanna and Chris, I helped prepare the meal for the Church of the Brethren's Alternative Gift Fair. I cut green onions for the taco salad bar and helped mix the cauliflower meat alternative. Afterwards, we helped clean up the kitchen.

On Halloween, Chris and I went to weed the Peace and Carrots Garden at the Church of the Brethren. We got to plant new broccoli, bok choy and cauliflower as well. Marvhic and Kristina came by the garden to visit while we were working.

This Tuesday, Chris and I weeded one of the Church beds in the Peace and Carrots Garden. We velcroed the vines of the main plant, Persian cucumbers, to wires to help them grow better, like Kristina requested. We also returned to the bed we worked on last time to keep up maintenance on it.

Chris and I visited the Peace and Carrots Garden at the Church of the Brethren to weed the beds that Marvhic and Kristina had requested. When we arrived, Mike (the creator of the garden) was finishing up work on his bed. While he waited for his wife, who was inside the church conducting interviews, we had the opportunity to get to know him and learn about his experiences in the garden. We made considerable progress removing the weeds in and next to the bed, and it was rewarding to be able to see the difference from when we started.

Today, Chris and I met with Kristina and Marvhic at the Peace & Carrots garden of the Church of the Brethren. We toured the garden and they briefed us on our roles and responsibilities. There are several primary beds that the Church would like us to focus on, including one planted by the Sunday school; the Church also rents plots to various community members, and the University of La Verne has two itself. A portion of the food grown by the Church is donated to food banks, and they'd like to see about partnering with the University food pantry. Finally, we met with Karinna to fill out our forms and make sure we had everything we needed to start working.

This Sunday, I, along with the other students serving with the Church of the Brethren and several members of the church, helped prepare meals for Hope for Home. We made pulled barbecue chicken for sandwiches, elote with cotija cheese, and coleslaw. Afterwards, several of us delivered the food to the center and got to see the people we were impacting. It was nice to get to know some additional members of the community, and continue building a relationship with Pastor Bennett.
