Dog for the Day - Take a shelter dog out for a day of fun and/or relaxation!

Open Opportunity

About

Our Dog for the Day program is a great way to give our pups a break from the shelter environment and get them seen by potential adopters! You can take one of our pups to the park, go for a hike, or simply relax in your home. The potential for fun is endless!

To participate in Dog for the Day, please adhere to the following program guidelines:

  • Participating humans MUST be 18 years or older.
  • All dogs eligible to participate are spayed/neutered, microchipped, and up to date on vaccines.
  • You will be provided with a leash, harness, and an “adopt-me” vest for the dog you choose.
  • Participating dogs MUST remain on leash at all times, unless in an enclosed area of your home, apartment, or a private fenced-in yard.
  • Participating dogs are not allowed to go to dog parks or to meet other pets.
To sign-up for a pick-up date for our Dog for the Day program, navigate to the Get Started section on our Dog for the Day web page and select the location closest to you from which you would like to pick-up a dog. Please note, the Fulton County Animal Services location is our most central location (address listed) but we welcome you to participate in this program from whichever of our three locations is best for you.

Where to go and what to do?

Shelter dogs get exercise and socialization at our shelters but getting time out of the shelter helps them destress and present a more positive behavior, which is helpful for getting them adopted. Consider taking your dog for the day out on a hike at one of the local parks, for a stroll on the beltline, or simply to your house or apartment to chill and watch TV with your friends.

If you do decide to go out for an excursion, here are some dog friendly places in Atlanta that we've identified. If you know of more places, please help us grow our list by submitting a place.

Share your adventure!

Be sure to post about your fun day with your shelter dog on social media! Potential adopters love to see adoptable dogs enjoying a day outside of the shelter. You never know who may be watching, and your friends can always share your post to reach even more people. Feel free to post content on our Adoptable Pets of LifeLine public Facebook page.

Also, please send any notes, photos, and videos of your day to content@lifelineanimal.org. We may also share your outing to our social media channels, feature the story in a blog post, use the story for greater promotion of our programs, and will use the information to better advertise the dog to potential adopters who come into our shelter.
