This volunteer role was not very well defined (I was not assigned to a specific hall, more to an area; and the staff at the check-in tents did not really seem to need assistance nor know of specifics I could take care of for them). Since I had read the shift details, I partnered up with another volunteer and just went walking around to find carts. Found 4 total on my shift, 2 of which we offerred to return as people were completing their move-in. I left hoping that I was at least able to make some impact since it did seem as if this role was not necessarily needed, at least in Stearns East/West.
The hall did not have a temporary access card for me to be able to help students at the elevators, so I ended up checking out carts while an RA went to staff the elevator. Checking out the carts was a great volunteer opportunity, I enjoyed it. Great to be able to meet students and their friends/families moving them in.
While I felt I was able to be of assistance as passers by had questions, need for directions or a friendly face to say hello - I did not do anything that was contained in the "shift details" for this role. Those duties were covered by CU Parking Services staff and Argus staff. I was asked as a volunteer to be "nearby" the Argus staff to help them with answering CU specific questions. It may be worth evaluating this role and redesigning its responsibilities.
