There was no briefing of the volunteers to outline their responsibilities and he was not a very active participant throughout the shift. We had two volunteers who sat in chairs by the road to supposedly direct traffic given that they were not assigned any duties. Fortunately our group of 6 volunteers were all experienced and were able to effectively service the riders. Race organizers should also consider more signage approaching the left turn into the Carter Aid Station as we had a number of close calls with cars trying to pass riders as they were about to make the turn.
My wife and I very much enjoyed the opportunity to serve as course marshals for this event. As feedback for consideration, I would offer the following:
- The intersection of CO 4 and 9D was extremely busy during the event (mostly race crews chasing their athletes). Having at least two course marshals at this intersection is essential to ensure the safety of athletes.
- I understand there were no road closures during this event (other than 6th St), but allowing traffic to turn onto 9D while athletes were approaching that crossing was concerning. We had several vehicles on CO 4 that thought it was okay to go ahead and turn onto 9D even though we had traffic blocked as riders approached the intersection. That created at least 3-4 close calls with riders approaching CO 4 from 9D. I'm not sure if anything can be done to reduce or eliminate traffic on 9D during the race, but it was a concern.
- Having some sort of "flags" for course marshals to use to attract the attention on oncoming traffic might be helpful. I know light batons were available for use during hours of darkness, but just a simple orange or red flag to wave would have improved our ability to attract the attention of oncoming traffic.
My husband/partner Course Marshall provided our feedback in his input.
Note: I am requesting my hours be donated to my husband, Joe Joyner, for use in securing entry into the 2022 LT100 Run. Thank you.
