I was mainly concerned when the support UTV's drove around the road, crushing pristine alpine tundra. Cones were set up on the last part of the loop, but we could have easily moved them temporarily so the vehicles could drive by. Off road travel eventually creates new roads, which must be avoided in this special plant community.
In the same week that the United Nations declared a Climate Emergency, the Leadville 100 took place. I appreciate any actions taken to lower our carbon footprint with this event. Carpooling to stations, recycling, and the promotion of bicycle riding definitely have a positive impact. There still is, however, waste involved. I know athletes appreciate their GU, for example, but the micro trash and wrapper accumulations can be overwhelming. At some point it will become unsustainable to consume foods with much packaging. On the other hand, I understand the practicality!
Overall, the Leadville 100 is a fabulous event, bringing the community together for a common purpose, and inviting riders (and runners) from around the globe to test their strength in this beautiful mountain environment.
